Rani Chakraborty – Root
During an era marked by turbulence, Rani was born on the 16th of September 1940, in the quaint town of Srirampur in West Bengal to parents Prabhodh Kumar Ghatak and Karunamayee Devi. At the tender age of 5, she was nurtured into the world of music by her first Guru, her caring mother Karuna.

Although she didn’t realise it at the time, as a young girl, she always had an affinity for fine arts, and after watching Baiju Bawra, she discovered her first love – classical music!
At the age of 11 years, she performed for the first time on a stage at the Martin company, a renowned coal company in Bengal. Soon after, she started training under Guru Shantaram Singh.
As it was the norm during those days to get married at a young age, Rani’s mother arranged for her to get married at just 15, but she was truly a woman ahead of her time. Defying what society expected from her, she left home and moved to her uncle’s house where she continued to train under Guru Vishnu Sevak Mishra.
She knew that in order to fulfil her love for music, it was vital that she had the education to support it, and hence, she finished her Sangeet Visharad from Morris College in Kolkata run by the famous Chinmay Lahiri who was Guru to the acclaimed Parveen Sultana. She completed the next two years training in Raag Pradhan under Guru Deepali Nag, wife of the great scientist Dr. Kalidas Nag. Rani also realised that her talent could be shared with others and at the tender age of 15 she saved up to purchase a Tanpura. She then travelled extensively by train across Mumbai to teach young
upcoming talent. She gained extensive experience teaching at Holy Cross Convent (Kalyan), National College of D.Ed and B.Ed and Chandibai College (Ulhasnagar). Apart from this, she also took classes at home and gave lessons at various renowned corporates like National Rayon and Century Rayon in Ulhasnagar.
Rani was an avid performer and participated in multiple stage shows. In a programme arranged by Jolly Mukherjee’s father, Rani sang with Mukul Rai in the presence of Baba Bhajan Bramhachari. She performed with legendary Manna Dey at Shivaji Park as well as at the Bengal club and Patkar Hall. She has also sung with Hemant Kumar at Chembur and Sabir Sen as well as Minu Purshottam in Allahabad. In 1980, the music industry in India was making a shift into the commercial space and Rani with the support of Sudha Chopra performed a live show on Doordarshan – one of the largest National Networks of the time. Her performance was based on 16 Ragas and has truly been a hallmark in her dynamic music career.
Little did Rani know that all those years of hard work would be poured into a fruitful legacy. Her life has been truly colourful, with experience spanning over several decades, and now her love for the art of music is more alive than it has ever been!

Sagota Chakraborty – Founder
On the 15th of September 1967, Sagota was born to parents Rani & Amulya Chakraborty in Kalyan, Mumbai. Sagota was immersed in a universe that revolved around music from the minute she came into this world, and started training and practicing at the mere age of 2. Along with her mother, she had the privilege to take talim under Guru – Guni Gandharva Laxman Prasad Jaipurwale and over the years strengthened her musical knowledge under the tutelage of various skilled Gurus.

While most children were still learning to navigate their way in the world, Sagota had her first stage performance at just the age of 6 years alongside the legendary Mannadey and her very own mother Rani. She was what some would describe as a true prodigy and soon began to accompany her mother with the harmonium for classical Khayal bandish. In addition to her already remarkable skill set, she also learned how to play the tabla and took guitar lessons from professor Phalke in Dombivli.
Inspired by her mother’s methodology, she followed the technique of making notations of various Raagis and bollywood songs. This equipped her with an in-depth knowledge which excelled her confidence and took her understanding of classical music to a new level.
For Sagota, her love for music transcended into pursuing music education and she successfully gave her music exams at Nutansangeet Vidyalaya in Dombivli. She went on to study and practice Ghazal Gayal from guru Vijay Singh Chouhan. Armed with knowledge that most people take decades to acquire, Sagota surpassed her own goals and finally set out to materialise her musical dreams.
Her talent took flight as many T.V. Channels approached her to be a part of various musical reality shows which hosted impeccable talent such as K.K, Sudesh Singh, music director Sajid Wajid and many more. Performing live for Sagota was not about getting recognition or applaud. What mattered was the experience and learnings she soaked up through every opportunity. Having performed with stars like Shalendra Singh, Tarikh Shah and Vikas Bhalle, she recalls memories of each experience fondly and draws wisdom from every one of the wonderfully talented people she was fortunate enough to come across through her musical journey.
As she gained more experience and exposure over the next few years, she was invited to many shows as an honourable chief guest
alongside the likes of Shaan, Purab Kohl, Band of Boys, Jojo, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Roopkumar Rathod, Sushma Shreshtha, Anup Jaloka and Kavita Sheth to name a few. She is also well known amongst the top tier educational institutes throughout the city and frequently judges competitions at Don Bosco’s, JBV, SIES, SNDT, Vidya Vihar and Little Angels, as well as well-known clubs like Lions Club, Rotary Club and Inner Wheels Club. She has also trained several students from H.R. and K.C. College for their annual day functions and hosted the delightful MG Idol at Matunga Gymkhana.
In the year 1991, Sagota along with a few people from around her locality decided to organise a Christmas Party for the neighbourhood. Little did she know that out of this simple idea, something truly magical would be born. She would teach children to sing and perform at the party which became the hit event that everyone looked forward to as each year passed by. Though the party eventually came to a halt in the year 2000 due to redevelopment in the area, people still wanted to send their children to learn music from Sagota.
It was during this time that Sagota finally felt like she had truly found her calling. Realizing that her skills and techniques were truly celebrated and supported in Matunga, there was absolutely no looking back for her. She decided that it was time to give her devoted students a bigger platform and in the year 2001, Sagota Music Academy was officially named. The academy had its first annual day on the 18th of August, 2001 which was attended and inaugurated by singer Shaan. Since then SMA has expanded tenfold and the Annual Day became a much awaited event for all students!
